New translation: Nils Holgersson’s Wonderful Journey through Sweden
Peter Graves’s new translation of Nils Holgersson’s Wonderful Journey through Sweden was launched by Norvik Press, London (www.norvikpress.com) in February 2013. It is the very first English translation of the complete Swedish text; the previous translation, by Velma Swanston Howard, published 1907-11, involved substantial cuts. The new translation, generously supported by the Swedish Academy, Stockholm, includes 20 full-page illustrations by Bea Bonafini, a final-year student at the Slade School of Art, University College London. Paul Binding, reviewing the volumes in the Times Literary Supplement, 14 Dec. 2012, wrote most enthusiastically about ‘Peter Graves’s superb, attentively faithful new rendering of Selma Lagerlöf’s masterpiece’.
Nils Holgersson’s Wonderful Journey through Sweden is part of the Norvik Press series ‘Lagerlöf in English’, co-ordinated by Helena Forsås-Scott and launched in 2011 with Lord Arne’s Silver (transl. Sarah Death), The Phantom Carriage (transl. Peter Graves), and The Löwensköld Ring, transl. Linda Schenck). Charlotte Löwensköld, translated by Linda Schenck, is due to be published in autumn 2013, and funding is being sought for the translation and publication of further volumes.
